What am I allergic to?

One common misconception is the belief that a person is allergic to an animal’s fur. However, the allergic reaction is usually triggered by the dander of a cat or dog. Dander consists of dead skin cells that flake off when the outer layer of skin renews itself, a normal, ongoing process. This turnover is faster in animals who are prone to various skin problems, such as dry skin and oily seborrhea. A cat can sometimes trigger allergic reactions when a dog does not because cat dander is smaller and lighter, so it remains suspended in the air longer than dog dander. Saliva and urine on the fur of dogs and cats are also potential sources of allergens. When the fur dries, microscopic particles flake off and become airborne. A compound called Fel D1 present in the saliva of cats, and also secreted from their skin glands, can trigger allergic reactions.

Dust mite allergy is an allergic reaction to tiny bugs that commonly live in house dust. Signs of dust mite allergy include those common to hay fever, such as sneezing and runny nose. Many people with dust mite allergy also experience signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty breathing.

Dust mites, relatives of the spider, are too small to see without a microscope. Dust mites eat skin cells shed by people, and they thrive in warm, humid environments. In most homes, bedding, upholstered furniture and carpeting provide an ideal environment for dust mites.

Steps to reduce the number of dust mites in your home can often control dust mite allergy. Medications or other treatments may be necessary to relieve symptoms and manage asthma.

At The Vacuum Specialists we have a variety of anti allergen equipment that will help  fight the allergens.

A high efficiency particulate air  (HEPA) filter is a type of air filter that satisfies certain standards of efficiency such as those set by the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

HEPA filters, as defined by the DOE standard adopted by most American industries, remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers (µm) in diameter. The filters maximum resistance to airflow, or pressure drop, is usually specified around 300 Pa at its nominal flow rate.

  • Air purifiers:

We carry two types of air purifiers: Built-in Frigidaire with Hepa, charcoal, and foam combination filtration system, and the Oreck washable cell air cleaner.
